Star Trek Online Goes Vanilla

Earlier this week, PWE posted up the following message

Important: Over the course of the week we’re going to be migrating over our forums to Vanilla. This process will involve transitioning over our data from all of our old forums. We’ll be periodically rolling out each of the forums into Vanilla once the data is moved over and properly sorted. If the forums aren’t there for your specific game, it’s because the transfer hasn’t been completed yet. We appreciate your patience as we go through the upgrade process.

This will be their second go around with forum migration from vBulletin to Vanilla. But it looks like the second time was the charm as the STO forums were up and running as of yesterday. As expected, there was a mixed reaction by the users to the new forums.

I am not a fan of Vanilla forums, a better choice would have been to update the version of software they were using. After all, vB 3.7.1, the version of vBulletin they were using, came out about 7 – 8 years ago, while their current version is version 5.1.7. Even Xenforo in it's current minimal state would have been head and shoulders better than Vanilla.

However, I guess the move to Vanilla takes a lot of the backend work out of their hands and judging from the comment below made by someone on their staff, it's probably a good idea since they can't seem to find the light switch on the best backend in forum software.

I think there should be a subsection for podcasts and community events/specifics, but as was pointed out that won't happen yet under these forums that have an antiquated backend.

Feel free to take a look around and judge for yourself, the new Vanilla forums located at http://www.arcgames.com/en/forums
