My future in Djing

I hear you Coast and that is fine if that is what you want more power to you but it just pisses me off when you have some peeps out there that put themselves on a high horse because they use Vinyl(Not talking about you Coast) Big freaking deal..... take out your 1985 vinyl and I will take out my same 1985 song and we will see which one sounds better. Face it vinyl is another form of media which is outdated like Cassette, Reel 2 reels, 8 track, since it has many drawbacks. If you like to use it more power to you but don't talk down to others who have gone digital since they don't want to be stuck in the 80's. Again I am not talking about you specifically Coast just those who talk down to other DJs who use Digital media.

I think one of you guys put me down with Dj Enferno on a thread a while back, either way this guy is tight, and whoever let me know about him...thanks...
You welcome! ;)

That woudl be me...:Banana09:

The look and feel of a record means so much to me. If records were wiped off the face of the earth than I would quit. I can never see myself doing it any other way, its just me though.
I'll tell you what............If it weren't for Serato I would would have dumped turntables all together. Serato is as close as your going to get to the "look and feel" you are seeking. To me it is the best of both worlds..........digital playback with old school analog track manipulation. As was said the only reason to truly be all vinyl is for "personal enjoyment or nastalgia" because unless your playing for other DJ's who is really going to care what medium you are playing.

Code:
You welcome! ;) .

Ha ha, it was you, yeah man I have forwarded his youtube links to so many people. Seriously awesome shit that guy throws down. The Pink Floyd remix he did is what grabbed me the most...just sick...

I will take out my same 1985 song and we will see which one sounds better.

Actually Jose, the vinyl would sound better. The only reason dj's have gone digital is for conveinence. I have many mobile dj friends who obviously had to get with the times and now have the latest in technology, and all of them tell me how much they miss spinning vinyl. Of course a mobile dj really has no choice today, he has to be up to date with the latest technology. I know what it feels like carrying 10 crates of records to a gig. If I was a mobile dj, then it would be Serato for me, no if, ands, or buts about it.

But to answer your question about what would sound better, and thats a no brainer. Just google it, this was the first one of thousands to come up. Its a fact nothing out yet has been able to produce a better sound than vinyl. thats why its been around since the 1800's and will never go away.

Good read:

An analog format such as vinyl records are said to be more accurate to the source of the music than digital formats, which convert the music into a digital format, before being converted back to analog for reproduction.

Vinyl records provide a more rich, warm tone than digital formats. The reason for this better tone is because the grooves on records provide more musical data to your amplifier. When the stylus (needle) fits into the groove of the record, it vibrates in such a way that is reminiscent of the soundwaves present when the artists performed the song. When amplified, you get a reproduction of the original performance.

When the musical data is converted into a digital format, there are various "resolutions". To use photos as an example, it would be the difference between a 100x100 pixel picture, and a 1000x1000 pixel picture. For CDs, it is 16-bit. For DVD Audio up to 24-bit. Then, there is a sample rate, which is how often these photos are taken. For CDs, they happen 44,100 times per second. DVD Audio, up to 192,000 times per second. For SACDs, an amazing 2,000,000+ samples per second. You can see how the more advanced digital formats would sound better than CDs, which is how most people listen to digital music.

In the case of digital formats like MP3 and AAC, some of the higher frequencies get pulled out to save space, in addition, these formats are taken from a CD, and compressed, so they could never approach the sound quality of a CD. I expect digital music formats to continue to gain in popularity, and I also expect even better formats to come out, with new digital format remasters, which could sound much better than a CD (Or even DVD-A or SACD), have more customization options, and of course, undisputed portability. Are you listening, record companies?

How specifically vinyl sounds better:

Vinyl seems to reproduce the higher frequencies much better. On digital, high frequencies (voices, cymbals, drums, etc.) sound thinner, harsher, "swishy", simply not as good. On vinyl, these high frequencies sound more natural, less harsh, more "real". Also, very small high-pitched nuances shine through better, like for example when a bass player plucks a string.

Bass seems to sound fuller on vinyl as well. It sounds thicker, richer, more natural, more nuanced. It's nice. When listening to bass on vinyl, you'll know why so many DJs still use vinyl to this day. On digital, bass seems to be muddier, thinner...it has less impact.

It's true that vinyl does have some weaknesses, such as pops and hiss, but these are eliminated if the record is clean. The pops and hiss also add a nostalgic charm to the sound of the music. Some artists, especially hip hop, have incorporated this sound into their music.

If you love the sound of music, and want to hear something that has a better sound than CDs and MP3s, you should give vinyl a listen. Once you hear it, you'll become a fan too!

Alan Bayer is a music enthusiast and entrepreneur. Visit his website Vinyl Revinyl for much more about vinyl, as well as a wide selection of records for sale.

Alan says: "Join the return to vinyl."

There are a lot of variables in sound. The environment (background noise, speakers, amps and room conditions), the condition of the media (bit rate, sample rate, needle condition, vinyl condition just to name a few) to consider. To make sweeping statements is ill advised at best, foolish at worst.....

Not to mention after a certain point one must be an audiophile to hear subtle differences in sound quality. If you are putting that much effort into hearing the difference, your missing your break....

So you say your 1985 vinyl will sound better then my 1985 MP3 right? Oh yeah I forgot that you like the Pops and cracks! OK guy's now it is time for me to retire from this thread!

Somehow my threads always turn into a digital vs vinyl debat. The funny thing is I never ever put down digital dj's. I try to be as careful as ever with the words I choose as not to offend them. Probably 50% of the dj mixes I have bought or downloaded the past few years have been made from digital means, and I love em no less than the ones produced on vinyl. Actually I am rocking a PHAT ASS MIX that Rafel made recently, I think it was made with cdj's, not sure, but its sick and I just got done blasting it in my truck all day...banging bro...This is not a debate. Its a fact that digital is more conveinent, cheaper, and there are endless possiblities with creativity that go along with it, now the art of "Harmonic Mixing", it all great.

Jose, I never put down digital dj's, but it seams every time I post about me spinning vinyl I am put down. Of course I am going take great offense to this and react with a defensive post. But the fact is I am staying with what I love, I am not "stuck in the 80's" I have nothing against a cdj. I love alot of this new technology. I can only watch HD TV now, I only order blue ray flicks, I have an Ipod, WI, PS3, top of the line fishing gear, laptops, new cars, everything out now is cool. But as far as djing goes, I spin vinyl. My mixer is top of the line and as modern as it gets, the Pioneer DJM-700, I plan on using an effects machine and sampler to further enhance my creativity. I just simply choose to use vinyl. So leave me alone about it, let me do my own thing. Vinyl aint going nowhere, and neither I am I...djc.

With all that being said, at least we have some action over here on the Dj Forum, its all good guys, lets just get along please..and keep the negative comments to yourself. I had to go back and edit a post or two as when I was typing I was in "defense mode" and realized I came off a little too harsh.

It ain't going anywhere? Well what the heck happened to all the stores around here that closed shop? What happened to all the Factories that made the Vinyls? Have fun trying to buy your song and going all around your city tring to find that new song that I had two weeks ago in an MP3! LOL....good luck.

1. It ain't going anywhere?

Huh?

2. Well what the heck happened to all the stores around here that closed shop?

You must live in an area that has no customer based for records...here in NYC and in Philly that is not the case.

3. What happened to all the Factories that made the Vinyls?

Nothing there are still pumping out records to capacity.

4. Have fun trying to buy your song and going all around your city tring to find that new song that I had two weeks ago in an MP3!

So...you got a mp3 in hand..not, I got a record in hand that actually is worth something and has value.

True to the art? Tell that to a plumber that needs to drain a toilet using a stick that they used back in the 80's? You know what? They now have better tools for him to use. Give me a freaking break! True to the art? LOL......Tell my ex-wife that that house that was built in the 70's is better then the houses now. They might be better built but guess which one they will pick?
Stay with your Vinyls and I stay with my MP3's we will see which one will last longer..... BTW don't forget to take out your vinyls from the car they might get warped as I have forgotten my HD with a trillion songs and as good as new.

Do you know what you are saying dude? Do you know how many DJs use Macs or PCs that are in a position way better then you will ever be? DJ AM, DJ Jazzy Jeff are just a few that did or do use it. Have you seen DJ AM or DJ Jazzy Jeff in action? Do you think you can cue or load songs as fast as they can? Is that all the argument you have? That the sound is better? Well I tell you what.... So take that argument to an old man club vinyl forum cause I don't buy it. This coming from a guy who use to use it and before me my brothers were DJS back in the 70's. Maybe this mobile DJ can run laps around you so don't underestimate the peeps you don't know anything about.........

You analogy about a plumber is not only silly but actually shows the mentality of your thinking. If an old school plumber uses a stick to get the job done he would not spend money on new things that do the same thing.

DJ AM and Jazzy Jeff..ok...let's go with this analogy now. One is DEAD so his DJing is kaput..and Jazzy is a hip hop DJ. I am not a hip hop DJ nor does it take real talent to mix hip hop.

I can cue faster, load faster, scratch faster, Take a trillion songs that while you are saying no to the dancers, I am loading them at a blink of an eye!

Cue faster, nope, load faster, n/a, take a trillion songs, that statement just shows me what you really are which is a human jukebox. I am a big room club and radio dj, that is NOT YOU. You seem to be a mobile dj, and for that mps and computers may be the thing for you and others, but when you take the talented human element out of any equation things will suffer.

Maybe this mobile DJ can run laps around you so don't underestimate the peeps you don't know anything about.........

Wishful thinking on your part...

But let me ask you this, what have you accomplished in the DJing arena to act like such an expert?

no disrespect to the purists, and I know you are an acomplished DJ.... Tony

but having a Modern set up with the most techologically advanced gear is more true to the art than sticking with Pure vinyl .

in the eighties & 90ies every DJ I ever met was constantly talking about the Next best piece of gear they could get thier hands on / So I dont see why any one would discourage a Digital set up with Analog capabilities .

Best of both worlds ... if you want to mix vinyl throw on a record / wanna use TCV throw... it on ...wanna do pure digital go staight from the controller ...Just go for it

( I will say the only one I do not see any value in is the CD player why use these things ((unless its a controler & a cd player )

Vdj6 & tracktor Pro , SSL3 , Itch ,etc. do not dodge or delay / now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in the past year the settings for latency is near indistiquishable by the human ear when set up correctly.

pure fact is that NO one uses traditional vinyl other than for personal enjoyment or nastalgia.

as far as sound quality goes - there are as many records out there that are crappy pressings as there are corrupted mp3 files.

High & low quality can be found in both materials.

An artist is an Artist .....if they choose to master one Media ..thats fine ....if they master several than thats not being " UNTRUE " it gives them more tools to be creative with.

the VCI 300 is a peek, into the future of DJing

Also I know current Radio / Club ( AC Casino's ) and Mobil DJs and one international DJ .....the ALL use varouos forms of modern media ...ALL of them ...so Tony your great at your style but it has become the outlier

You know I use cd's at times and use them well, however I enjoy vinyl because of many reasons.

See the truth of the issue is simple convenience that's all. And the reason is money..it costs less to produce and distribute an mps than it does to actually produce something which costs $$ with the use of materials.

Don't get me wrong I have no issues with using MP3 because I do, however as a LIVE performer you do not have the creative aspect that you do with vinyl when you use MP3. Now I would not expect many of you guys to understand that because you have never seen a live vinyl DJ work it properly...that is not your fault.

International DJ's and others before MP3 lugged records and quite honestly a crowd does not know what goes on in the booth unless they are there seeing it, but let me say this if they did they will go home all the time with the most respect for the vinyl DJ..that is just the truth.

Talent is talent..either you have it or you don't, MP3, beatlock etc..all this new technology just allows people on the large scale to become a "DJ"...that doesn't mean they truly are.

Interesting...what beatlock can do for you...4 sources and beatlock...

Let's see him do with vinyl on 4 turntables and without beatlock, I can do it, but I am sure he could not....now see that is the difference..it is about true talent, don't tell me that someone that does that on vinyl and then someone on MP3/computer have the same talent...

I used to carry 15 orange crate full of vinyl to shows, not too mention a 6 foot coffin. Then CDs came out, cool less weight to move around. Now, over 25 years later, I can carry my entire catalog on an ext. hard drive. SWEET!!!! I got tired of dragging my sorry ass up and down the stairs 16 times a night. My VCI-300 and I get along just fine. It can do anything I can do with vinyl, and weights a whole freaking bunch less. If turntables are your bag, have fun, loose your mind, just don't ask me to help carry anything. I've served my time in hell.....

Terry...it is about convenience, like fast food is....over the long run you get sick and bloated eating it.

Eat real natural foods.

Pisacco would not use Seratto nor MP3.

Interesting choice Tony. The artist most famous for cutting off his ear.... ;)

I worked a saloon tonight. I walked in five minutes before show time and set up. Started two minutes early.

About an hour into my night a very pleasant woman came up and asked if I had any freestyle. So, I start with some Corrina. Did about 30 minutes worth, ending with Diamond girl, and she was tickled pink. She asked me if I ever heard of this site Freestyle.fm? "Heard of it!?! I used to spin on it!" She was impressed, told me she used to tune in on Wednesday's when she had the chance and never realized I was from our area.

I progressed into a hip hop set. Dance floor was popping! I end up the night, with a current house/dance set, to an old groupie of mine I have not seen in years come running up, give me a big hug and proclaim "You better than ever Terry!"

The bar closed, I put my gear away in under 15 minutes. I had several wanna-bees come up and ask what I was using. "Just my PC and VCI-300" "Dude, you need some turn tables" OK, cool, I'll play with them when I get home tonight. Then I told him a very hard truth. "My young friend, the difference between you and me is, I can use your system and still put together a decent set. You, on the other hand, could not use my set up without asking a few questions first." He smiled, nodded his head and agreed. I collected my doe-ray-me and waltzed out the door.

Convenient? YES!! Sorry,... HELL FUCKING YES!!! After 25+ years I will always choose to work smarter, not harder.

All that being said, I still respect guys who have stuck by what they know best. I chose to embrace the technology. Just like Orvil and Wilber Wright did.......

You guys are funny. This thread has become quite entertaining to read.

When I first started djing, I was the local mobile dj who only did special occasions where club music was mandatory. Mostly bars in Philly where freestyle and old school rap (when it actually was good) was the genre of choice, also doing block parties, beef-n-beers, serious house parties, underground parties, raves, ect. I never wanted to get into the full mobile scene doing weddings, ect. Its a completely different world for me. I could never do it, God Bless those who do, its just not for me. Me, I will never play a record I don't like, I would rather be thrown into the middle of the Berring Sea in february than have to play a song like the Macarena or Bango Bus. I did many gigs where I had to bring all of my equipment. When I got my first club gig, I was instantly hooked. It was the best having to bring just a few bags of records to a club and walk right up to the booth and every thing was ready to go. There is no better feeling in the world than having a 1000 people dancing to your fingetips, the people, the environment, the whole scene, some of the best times of my life. The fact that you can walk into a club with two bags of records, spin for 4 hours, drink for free, not to mention the connections made meeting new people and actually walking out with over a grand in the pocket, the best I tell ya, the best.

I really wish things worked out different for me as far as the dj scene goes, but I had to choose the career path I did once I got married.

1. It ain't going anywhere?

Huh?

2. Well what the heck happened to all the stores around here that closed shop?

You must live in an area that has no customer based for records...here in NYC and in Philly that is not the case.

Good take a trip to your store and hope that it is in stock! While I can buy my copy of a song while at my gig since the stock will always be there.

3. What happened to all the Factories that made the Vinyls?

Nothing there are still pumping out records to capacity.

Nope wrong again! Look back a few years when record stores were closing and vinyl factories were closing doors.

4. Have fun trying to buy your song and going all around your city tring to find that new song that I had two weeks ago in an MP3!

So...you got a mp3 in hand..not, I got a record in hand that actually is worth something and has value.

Good luck finding a buyer since with all those pops and cracks not many will want it.

I see that you just want to answer the question that is convenient for you can you please give us the pros and cons about your precious Vinyls?

Using my MP3 compared to Tony's precious Vinyls:

Jose's MP3
I can Cue faster using my cue points to any part of a song
I have as many copies of a song as I want
NO POPS AND CRACKS
Don't have to put away any songs after playing
Carry a trillion songs
Cue up songs faster
I have loop feature to use

Any one else please add if needed to

Now Tony here will add his views

I am not a hip hop DJ nor does it take real talent to mix hip hop.

Wow what a great comment coming from The King of New york. It doesn't take talent to do what he does huh? MY Tony come back down to earth man you are a peanut compared to what he is and what many other Hip Hop DJ's are.

CUE FASTER YES, YES,YES...... take your precious vinyls, have it in the bin and we will have an old shootout like the wild wild west. We will see who has the music going first after they tell us what song to play.

You have your 20 record bins after getting them up in the booth that is on the second floor with no elevator and I will have my trillion song hard drive ready to go. They ask for any song, we sling out our guns search through our music, find the song and play it. Are you willing to put your money where your mouth is? $150.00 to the winner since you are so sure. Do you have it in you? So everyone out there can see where you are coming from?

Maybe this mobile DJ can run laps around you so don't underestimate the peeps you don't know anything about.........

Wishful thinking on your part...

But let me ask you this, what have you accomplished in the DJing arena to act like such an expert?

Thank you for that comment.

I play for crowds that you will never be able to from everywhere in the world.
Jamaicans, Haitians, Colombians, Cubans, Puertoricans, Dominicans, American, Country, Reggae, Classic Rock, Hip hop, Dance, Disco, Freestyle, Bass, Booty, Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Vallanato, Punta, 50's, 60's, anything else am I missing?

You know I use cd's at times and use them well, however I enjoy vinyl because of many reasons.

Enlighten us we are dying to know????????

Don't get me wrong I have no issues with using MP3 because I do, however as a LIVE performer you do not have the creative aspect that you do with vinyl when you use MP3.

Really? Creative? Well that DJ above on that video looked very creative to me. Now lets see how creative can you get on your precious vinyl that no one else can do it on their DVS? We all want to see your Videos? I bet it will be real good.

Come down to earth Mr. Tony maybe the guy really can use tables maybe he can't. You seem to have a real EGO trip going. Come down from your high horse and smell the roses!

Now prove to everyone here on FFM and all those future DJs all the reasons why vinyl is better.
Don't act like if you did not see it, come on and answer it.
